We Must Breathe
“We Must Breathe," in the words of our Executive Director Rev. Dr. Waltrina Middleton, is more than a theme for Community Renewal Society’s 138th Annual Membership Assembly. “‘We must breathe’ is a prophetic proclamation affirming self-worth and a righteous charge in the face of violence against Black and Brown bodies and lives,” she shares. The Annual Membership Assembly will take place on Saturday, October 3 at 10:30 a.m. via Zoom and is open to all. As we gather to reaffirm our platform commitments and CRS mission and values, “We Must Breathe” will be a resonating message throughout.
Today, we pause and reflect on the tragic events of the past few months and the senseless loss of life in Black and Brown communities at the hands of the police. CRS Associate Director of City and County Policy, Sarah Yousuf shares her A Prayer for Justice and Grace and Community Organizer, Rishona Taylor shares a meditation entitled Naked Before the Lord: A Song for My People.
Our goal to have the GAPA Ordinance on the agenda for the September 9 Chicago City Council meeting was not met and Mayor Lori Lightfoot has raised additional barriers to the adoption of a police accountability ordinance. Let the Mayor and alderpersons know you want citizen oversight, now. Visit our GAPA page to learn more.
Our community members also express their frustration with the lack of movement on police accountability. CRS supporter Sarah Harmon shares the letter she wrote to Mayor Lori Lightfoot after her sixteen-year-old son was profiled and assaulted by police outside their home. Harmon continued her call for police accountability by participating in CRS’ press conference held on September 3.
Your voice and your actions are needed now more than ever. Register to attend We Must Breathe, CRS' 138th Annual Membership Assembly.
