Embarking On A New Normal: Returning To School Amidst A Global Pandemic

Chicago Public School (CPS) students returned to their classrooms this past Monday for the first time in 17 months. There was great optimism about returning to school, as well as hesitancy due to COVID-19 and the rising number of cases due to the Delta variant. This is especially concerning for families with elementary school aged children who are presently ineligible for COVID-19 vaccination.

Students returned to full classrooms with limited options for social distancing. Parents across the city have expressed concern about CPS only offering remote learning for students with complex medical conditions. Many communities have requested a plan for weekly testing for 100% of students and school staff. CPS has stated that they would make testing available, but not required for all students, faculty and staff.

In some suburban school districts, some parents are fighting mask mandates despite the Center for Disease Control maintaining that masks are effective in slowing transmission of the virus. Most medical professionals are in support of returning to in-person school as long as strict safety measures are in place. These experts also acknowledge the risk of an increase in infections now that school is back in session. (1)

In-person learning and the social-emotional benefit of being around one’s peers has value for students and their families. From a socio-economic perspective, historically underrepresented groups may experience lasting effects of learning loss due to limited access to technology and parental work schedules limiting the amount of support students are able to receive at home. As a result of extended time away from their classrooms, the lack of socialization can lead to mental health concerns as well. Parents are facing a difficult situation that has no easy solution.

In support of our families, CRS Board Treasurer, Minister Ronald Howell shares Live Each Day, One Blessed Day at a Time. A variety of COVID-19 resources, including information specific to CPS, can be found on our website.

We pray for our parents and students, and for the faculty and staff in our schools who work tirelessly to provide our children with a safe and high-quality education.

In Solidarity,
