Illinois is in its last week of the fiscal year and legislators are currently meeting in Springfield for a special session. We are poised to enter our third year without a full budget, increasing the damage to our communities, schools, human service and healthcare sectors.

Illinois’ budget impasse has caused more than 1 million people to lose access to critical services – and that toll is increasing every day. In Matthew 25:40, Jesus calls us to act for the most vulnerable saying, “Just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” It is immoral that our state is not fully funding critical services for the people who need them the most.

While our lawmakers are in a special session through June 30, there is still no guarantee that the Governor and the General Assembly will agree on a fully funded responsible budget. We need a responsible and moral budget now – one that cares for our neighbors who are suffering.
