Chief Larry Snelling Selected As Next Chicago Police Superintendent

CPD Chief of Counterterrorism Larry Snelling has been selected to be Chicago’s 64th Police Superintendent, Mayor Brandon Johnson announced today. The Mayor’s selection requires City Council approval. Today’s selection follows a 120-day, nationwide search process by the Community Commission for Public and Accountability, in which Chief Snelling was selected by the Commission as one of the three finalists who were submitted to Mayor Johnson for his selection.
Chief Snelling’s remarkable career and long tenure with the Chicago Police Department make him an exceptional choice for the role of Superintendent. His proven leadership as chief of the bureau that focuses on criminal networks and narcotics, his dedication to cultivating robust community relations and his fervent commitment to elevating professional standards within the Department set him apart as a proven leader.

Next Steps for the Commission:
With Chief Snelling’s appointment as the next Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department, the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability remains committed to cultivating accountability. This will be achieved through vigilant oversight, achieved by fostering collaborative engagement with the Department, District Councils, Chicago residents and public safety organizations, and experts.
By ordinance, before the City Council holds a hearing and then votes on Chief Snelling‘s appointment, the Commission will hold a public hearing at which Chief Snelling will appear and answer questions from the Commission and the public. Residents will also have the opportunity to post questions and comments on the CCPSA website here. Detailed information about the public hearing’s date, time and location will be made available on the Commission’s website.
If the City Council votes to approve Chief Snelling’s appointment, the Commission will then hold a series of four public hearings. During these hearings, the newly- appointed Superintendent will have an opportunity to speak, and the public will be able to make comments, ask questions and provide recommendations to inform the Commission’s work with the Superintendent. To ensure geographical representation and accessibility, the Commission will host at least one hearing on the North, South and West Sides of Chicago.
